Soon after this we embarked on a new challenge to create a lodge in the rural, but breathtakingly beautiful, land of Karatu. Bordering the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The barren land inspired us to develop the already existing natural, raw beauty and turn it into something more: a Retreat, an oasis of sorts. Thus, the idea of "The Retreat at Ngorongoro" developed.
We wanted to showcase Africa’s beauty & bounty – areas not always shown to the world and embarked on stage one: to bring “life” to this place with a serious tree planting project that would also serve to off-set our carbon footprint. Planting over 40,000 indigenous trees, wasn’t an easy task, often losing many saplings to elephants trampling as well as shortage of water in the area, but we persisted, replanted; bought water for watering the trees during the dry seasons…. and success followed. The tree planting did much more than just enhance the already beautiful land; it brought in numerous bird species(hence our bird-themed concept of the lodge), insects and other small animals. It changed drastically the climate here…..which you will experience as you drive up dry, dusty roads & villages into this beautiful oasis.
The Lodge is located in the tourist town of Karatu on the Western south Slopes of Ngorongoro Crater at the 1,400 feet above sea level; the Lodge sits in a garden of flowers and vegetables. The property offers spectacular sweeping views of the hills and close distant to the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Eyasi, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park.

The camp is permanently based in central Serengeti, in the Seronera Valley, home to year-round wildlife due to the constant presence of water. This area is famous for spotting lion, leopard and large herds of elephant. Fantastic Osupuko Serengeti Tented Camp! Great location in the mid-Serengeti Seronera area. Tents are huge, rooms, bedroom & bathroom, separated so private & no noise from other guests. King-size beds and mattresses, very comfortable. Tents have netting all round, so no mosquito netting needed. The whole bedroom area has unzipable “windows” for air flow, no fans needed. Electricity by generator (couldn’t hear it) when you need it, usually morning & evening after safari, charging stations. A greet with cold juice & hot towels after safari & “bucket showers.” You’ll just have to see. All you need to know is that you have a hot shower whenever you want it & running hot water in the sink… in the middle of the Serengeti!
