Saadani National park is one stop destination to enjoy wildlife and beach at the same time. It is easily accessible as on overnight or weekend excursion. With terrestrial wildlife watching opportunities are the modest, animals are definitely present. In addition to hippos and crocodiles, it’s quite likely to see giraffes and elephant spotting are increasingly common.Boat trips along the Wami River, wildlife drives, bush walks and village tours can be arranged through most camps and lodges. Walking Safaris are a good way to get a taste of the bush and of Saadani’s more subtle attractions. They are available on dry season only.
The Saadani village is tiny and scruffy, just south to the main park area. It was a major port once and now you can see the crumbling walls of Arab-built fort that was used as a holding cell for slaves before they were shipped to Zanzibar. All the lodges here offer vehicle Safaris. You will likely need to explore main routes for best wildlife watching; during the rains, do not drive through saadani’s notorious black cotton soil.
