Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve

About National Park

Selous Game Reserve is Africa’s largest wildlife reserve and Tanzania’s most extensive protected area. It is also home for large herds of elephants, buffaloes, crocodiles, hippos, wild dogs, many bird species and Tanzanias remaining black rhinos.

It cuts a path past woodlands, grasslands and stands of borassus palm, and also provides some unparalleled water based wildlife watching. Here the reddish brown freshwater of the river mixes with the blue salt water of the sea, forming striking patterns and providing habitats for dozens of bird species and passing dolphins. The interested places in the parks are; Rufiji River, which flows to Indian Ocean opposite to Mafia Island and Stiegler George, a canyon of 100 metres width. Habitats include grassland, typical Acacia savannah, wetlands and extensive Miombo woodlands. Walking safaris permitted in Selous and boat trips are popular activity in Rufiji River. It has been designated a photographic zone and is a popular tourist destination.
