The fauna includes many species characteristic of the African savannah. According to the local guides at Mikumi, chances of seeing a lion that climbs a tree trunk is larger than in Manyara (famous for being one of the few places where the lions exhibit this behaviour.) The park contains a subspecies of giraffe, that biologists consider the link between the Masai giraffe and the reticulated or Somali giraffe. Other animals in the park are Elephants, Zebras, Impala, Eland, Kudu, antelope, Baboons, Wildebeests and Buffaloes. At about 5 km from the north of the park, there are two artificial pools inhabited by hippos. More than 400 different species of birds also inhabit the park.
After breakfast full day game drive in a specially modified safari vehicle with a professional whilst on safari, you can see a rich variety of bird species, as well as large numbers of giraffe, buffalo and elephants. If you are lucky you may also be able to spot lions, leopards and African wild dogs. Likely to be seen animals include zebras, hippos, hartebeest, wildebeest, impala, warthog, eland and antelope. Several observation towers enable you to overview the park in its entirety.
